Wetland Management
Cattai Wetland Project
The Cattai Wetland Project Plan of Management (18 August 2005) has been placed on public exhibition prior to Greater Taree City Council implementing the works program recommended by WetlandCare Australia.
Crown Land Conservation Partnerships
WetlandCare Australia (WCA), Department of Lands (DoL), Northern Rivers CMA (NRCMA), and Department of Primary Industries (DPI), worked together on a pilot program in the Clarence Catchment to identify and map the intersection of crown land grazing licences with priority wetland and key fish habitat areas.
Estuarine Wetland Health Assessment
The Estuarine Wetland Assessment project was funded by the NSW Government's Environmental Trust. It developed a sound methodology for assessing and prioritising estuarine wetlands, including intertidal mangroves & saltmarsh and dunal swamps & lagoons by reviewing and adapting existing assessment techniques & the guidance of a Technical Advisory Group (TAG). The result of this project was the development of the Wetland Assessment Technique.
Great Barrier Reef Coastal Wetland Protection Programme
Conservation Volunteers Australia and WetlandCare Australia combined to deliver a $2 million pilot programme under the CWPP to develop and manage on-ground activities to conserve and manage priority wetlands. The Australian Government has provided funding for wetland conservation and management in catchments adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef.
Northern Rivers Model Management
This project addressed the significant loss of riparian vegetation and degradation of wetlands in Northern NSW. The development of 'Model Management Sites' along the coast has provided a demonstration, on-ground, of how to achieve successful riparian habitat rehabilitation. In most cases, the community group or landholders are now managing the project, including running field days and accessing funding for continuing works. This project is funded by the NSW Environmental Trust.
Innovative Tools Stage 2
WetlandCare Australia worked with landholders who were looking for assistance in managing their properties for biodiversity in the NSW NRCMA region.
Guidelines for cane farms
Canegrowers Australia in conjunction with BSES, have launched a series of Best Management Practice (BMP) guidelines for sugar cane farmers, including 'Riparian and Wetland areas on Cane Farms' written by Bob Smith of WetlandCare Australia.
Local & Regionally Significant Wetlands
The project required the development and implementation of management plans for the protection and rehabilitation of locally and regionally significant wetlands in northern NSW.
Maintaining Australia's biodiversity hotspots
This highly successful project saw the protection of a total of 3229 ha of highly biodiverse, exceptionally high conservation value land in both the Ebor - Dorrigo - Coffs Coast and Torrington regions of NSW.
Pacific Highway Upgrade
WetlandCare Australia has been commissioned to design and implement a compensatory wetland plan for the Roads and Traffic Authority in Northern New South Wales. This project will continue over ten years from 2007.
Vegetative Filter Strips
The project developed vegetation filter strip technology to provide a cost effective model to improve biodiversity and water quality. The project was primarily aimed at cane farming. Several species of native and some exotic grasses were trailed for their values to attenuate pesticides and also to test their physical properties for use in a cane framing environment. This is an NHT funded project.
Upper Clarence Valley
WetlandCare Australia identified 98 hectares of high conservation value wetlands in the upper Clarence Valley. Funded by the Northern Rivers Catchment Management Authority.
Burnett Mary Region
WetlandCare Australia in partnership with the Burnett Mary Regional Group worked on the identification and implementation of on-ground works for strategic wetland targets, including collaboration with key stakeholders, supporting wetland project planning and facilitation throughout the region.
Paddy's River & Lake Bathurst
WetlandCare Australia has been working with the Hawkesbury Nepean Catchment Management Authority (HNCMA) to improve the condition of wetlands in the southern catchment. Management plans for the Paddy's River Wetlands & Lake Bathurst and the Morass have been completed and the project is now in the stage of implementing recommended on ground activities to improve and maintain the health of these nationally important wetlands.
