Starting in your Backyard
A wetland community education project

During 2009 and 2010, with funding from the NSW Environmental Trust, WetlandCare Australia conducted a trial community environmental education program called “Starting in your Backyard”. WetlandCare Australia is now offering this program to organisations as an education program designed to support on-ground works and engage communities in “ownership” of their local environment.
About Starting in your Backyard
Residential dwellings often adjoin natural environments where rehabilitation works are carried out. Education of residents who neighbour these environments is vital to the long-term success of any rehabilitation efforts.
Starting in your backyard is an environmental education program which uses targeted behaviour change workshops, bringing the community together through ‘learning for sustainability’ best practice.
Participants are given the opportunity to connect with their local environment, and are provided with knowledge and skills to positively impact the environment. They are asked to examine their practices, both in and around their homes, and are empowered to make changes by creating backyard action plans. Assistance is offered with the planning process at the workshops and through site visits.
