Wetland Art and Photography Exhibition in Ballina
To celebrate World Wetlands Day, for the past 4 years, WetlandCare Australia has annually hosted a nation-wide art and photography competition. The competition aims to encourage everyone to explore, engage with and share local wetlands and waterways, and to have a chance to win great prizes. From January 11 to February 5 we are displaying a selection of winning works from the 2008 to 2011 competitions at the Northern Rivers Community Gallery, 44 Cherry St Ballina. There will be an official opening at the gallery on Saturday 14th of January at 2pm.
With categories for children, youth and adults in art and photography, the competition draws hundreds of entries from around Australia each year. Competition coordinator Liz Hajenko said ‘It’s always exciting and inspiring to see the variety of works submitted each year, and this exhibition is a great opportunity to view a showcase of the unique and diverse winners from the previous 4 years of the competition’.
Local businesses are strong supporters of this national initiative, with The Northern Star and Ballina businesses; B-Framed, Dolphin Office Choice, Pristine Publications, Wappetts Chartered Accountants, Roshtech and the Ramada Hotel and Suites Ballina all playing an important role in seeing the competition continue to thrive and reach people across Australia with the message about the importance of wetlands to us all.
The competition is currently the only event to celebrate World Wetlands Day nationally in Australia. Falling on February 2, this internationally recognised date commemorates the signing of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance in 1971. The competition is held to spread the message of wise use of wetlands and their importance to us all, the key principles of the Ramsar Convention.
The exhibition is on display from January 11 to February 5. For more information, contact WetlandCare Australia on 02 6681 6169 or ballina@wetlandcare.com.au. To download a copy of the exhibition invite, click here
