WetlandCare AustraliaSupporting the Community to Protect and Restore Australian Wetlands Since 1991 |
With funding from the Federal Govenment Community Coastcare, the Knockrow Wetland Restoration project will restore and protect an area of important coastal wetland located in Northern NSW. This will include protecting an area of remnant vegetation, and revegetating over one hectare of adjoining wetland. An appropriate mix of native species will be planted in zones throughout the wetland. The services of a WetlandCare Australia wetland scientist will also be engaged to guide and oversee the activities.
Volunteers from the local community will be engaged to assist with the site preparation, planting and maintenance. By engaging the local community in the rehabilitation process, community awareness of protecting coastal environments will be enhanced and knowledge sharing will be enabled.
The project will lead to a reduction in stream bank erosion and watercourse siltation, and will reduce the degradation caused by acid sulphate soils, leading to downstream benefits in water quality. Rehabilitating and protecting this wetland area will help to preserve coastal biodiversity and threatened species. It will also contribute to combating the broader effects of habitat loss, invasive species and climate change on coastal environments.
