WetlandCare AustraliaSupporting the Community to Protect and Restore Australian Wetlands Since 1991 |
Like many areas of Australia, the Richmond catchment has suffered from a historical decline in biodiversity and water quality as natural areas have become fragmented and degraded. Under this project landowners in the Richmond catchment with high conservation value rainforest remnants and wetlands on their properties will be able to access technical and financial assistance to help them address issues such as weeds, stock management, erosion and lack of connectivity.
WetlandCare Australia is working with landowners in this area to protect and enhance up to 30 hectares of wetland area and 15 hectares of high conservation value rainforest remnants. Rehabilitation works such as fencing, weed control, stock management, planting and bush regeneration will serve to improve water quality in creeks and wetlands, and connectivity across fragmented remnants, with an overall net benefit to biodiversity and farm health.
To further enhance the capabilities of landowners to monitor the health of their wetlands, the community oriented wetland and riparian health assessment manual will be supplied to landowners. They will also be guided through the assessment process so that permanent quadrat and transect monitoring of such indicators as vegetation, potential habitat, bank condition and water quality can be conducted.
The outcomes of this project and lessons learnt will be promoted to a wider audience via a field day. The field day will showcase the protection and enhancement of critical biodiversity values as well as increases in water quality, and encourage the uptake of these strategies in other high conservation value areas.
