WetlandCare AustraliaSupporting the Community to Protect and Restore Australian Wetlands Since 1991 |
WetlandCare Australia has been working with the Hawkesbury Nepean Catchment Management Authority (HNCMA) to improve the condition of wetlands in the southern catchment. Management plans for the Paddy's River Wetlands & Lake Bathurst and the Morass have been completed and the project is now in the stage of implementing recommended on ground activities to improve and maintain the health of these nationally important wetlands.
On ground works such as fencing remnant vegetation, direct seeding revegetation works, provenance seed collection and feral animal control are some of the projects underway.
WetlandCare Australia has worked with local landholders, the community and stakeholders to identify threats and assets of both Paddys River Wetlands & Lake Bathurst and the Morass. Following the identification of threats a number of recommendations and management actions towards mitigating these impacts were made.
The community of both areas has played a major part in these projects. Community interest in the management plans has given rise to a locally based "Swampcare" group in the Southern Highlands whose aim is to improve the condition of local wetlands, including those in the Penrose State Forest.
The HNCMA's Landcare officer at Moss Vale has taken over the role of assisting the group with their activities.
The Rural Lands Protection Board is also involved with the project by mapping and removing rabbit harbour and ripping warrens on Crown land at Lake Bathurst. With the aid of the RLPB this work will continue on private land.
This stage of the project aims to be completed within the next 4 months. For information regarding the project contact project officer Michael Pattison on michaelpattison@wetlandcare.com.au.
