The East Chickiba SEPP 14 wetland is located in East Ballina on the Far North Coast of NSW. WetlandCare Australia was commissioned by Ballina Shire Council in 2008 to carry out an Environmental Impact Study and prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to examine the state of Chickiba SEPP 14 wetlands and determine which measures can be employed to improve the function of the wetland.
The hydrology of the wetland has been altered by urban development and construction of a soccer oval, roads, walking paths and drains resulting in prolonged flooding and a vegetation shift from forested melaleuca wetland to open freshwater wetland. The study has surveyed hydrology, geology, flora and fauna, fish, fire and urban impacts and will determine sustainable options to reinstate wetland function.
The EIS is currently being finalised and will be on display from July 2009 at Ballina Shire Council. For more information on the Rehabilitation of East Chickiba Wetland download the 'Chickiba Wetland Rehabiliation' brochure below. This brochure was distributed to local residents by WetlandCare Australia during June 2009 and is also available from the Ballina Shire Council website under 'Documents on Exhibition' or from the Council front office.
