Recreational values of wetlands

Wetlands are a natural focus of tourism and recreation in Australia. Many of us have spent summer holidays fishing, swimming, boating, water skiing etc. in and around wetlands on the coast, rivers and lakes.

Wetlands are an important tourism resource and are the basis of some significant regional tourism economies. You can get some idea of the monetary value of recreation and tourism in the Barwon-Darling River by considering the estimated revenue losses incurred in 1991 ($9.4 million) as a consequence of blue-green algal blooms.
